Reading Hacks – How to Make Reading Easier!
So, we understand that reading isn’t for everyone. Whether you lack concentration, simply can’t sit still, or struggle to get immersed, you might just find it difficult to curl up with a good book. But fear not! We have provided some reading hacks that just might help you discover a world that you didn’t even know you were missing.
If You Can’t Read, Listen!
Sometimes, it’s not the fact that you don’t like books; it’s just that you can’t focus on the written word. Whether you get headaches from focusing, or can’t stay in one place for too long, you might not be able to concentrate on a good book. So, rather than reading it, why not listen instead? Audio books are great, because you can be doing other stuff and still listen to that book you were itching to read. You can be ‘reading’ on the train, on a run, or even in the shower! And there’s so many apps for it now, including Audible, iTunes and Amazon.
Take Little Steps!
Now, you might really like classic stories and great Greek epics, but lets be honest – the size can be a bit intimidating. So, instead of trying to tackle that tome in one go, try reading little bits at a time. You could even set yourself a page count (say 20 pages in a day) and then stop reading for a while. By doing this, you won’t overexert yourself and you can actually enjoy reading Ulysses or War and Peace, without giving yourself a migraine.
Finding The Time...
Not everyone has time in the day to actually settle down in a cozy corner and lose themselves in a great book. But, you do have time throughout the day to read – while you’re waiting! Think about how many times a day you spending waiting on something: waiting for the bus, waiting for the laundry to finish, waiting for the chicken to roast. These are all times you could spend reading a quick few pages of your book – even if it’s only for ten minutes.
Step Away From The Phone!
This is an online world that we live in and we’re also guilty of pointless online scrolling. Even if you do sit down with a book, you’ll probably find yourself unlocking that phone within five minutes to check your Facebook one last time – who knows what could have happened?! So, what are you to do? Turn that phone off! Leave it in another room! Give it to a partner, parent or friend! You could even lock yourself out of it with certain apps. This way, you’ll be free from distractions and able to finally settle down with that paperback.
Branch Out!
Now, we all have that genre that we love – maybe it’s a good thriller, a spine-chilling horror, or a heart-warming romance. You have something that you like and you tend to stick with it. Unfortunately, this can get a little ‘samey’ after a while. The star-crossed couple gets together at the end; the good guy beats the baddie; they all live happily ever after. If you feel yourself getting bored with your current reads, why not branch out a bit and try something new? If you love reading fantasy novels, why not try a sci-fi classic? Maybe instead of the latest historical fiction, you read a good travel memoir. There’s so much variety out there, you can’t just stick to one topic. Plus, this way, you won’t get bored and you’ll find that you just can’t stop turning the pages!
