Our Top Five Snowy Books

Our Top Five Snowy Books

 |  Features

In keeping with the weather this week, we thought we'd list our top five snowy books for you to enjoy!

1. Winter Oak: Keeper of the Realm, by Colleen Marlett

Clover Lawless is not your average 12 year old girl. She is adventurous, inquisitive and with an unearned wisdom buried deep inside her. She doesn't buy in to any of the childhood fantasies and fairy tales. As far as Clover is concerned, "seeing is believing". Every day after school, Clover and her father Emmett drive up to Winter Oak where they tend to the horses that live there. Clover has always felt a connection to Winter Oak but never really understood why.

Winter Oak has a tragic past that none of the adults in the town will discuss with the children, but Clover is determined to find out what happened even if it challenges everything she has always known to be true.

Her adventurous streak and inquisitive nature get her the answers she seeks but it is not what she was expecting. What she finds is the mystery of her lineage intertwined with a history she could have only dreamed of, sending Clover to embark on the greatest adventure of her life. But, what does this mean for her future?

2. The Adventures of a Dog Called Snowy, by David Thorp

The year is 1902. Snowy is a white Chow Shepherd and belongs to Arthur Dell, a well-known and well-connected doctor and his wife, Anastasia, who live in Portman Square, London.

The couple take Snowy for a walk at the same time every morning.

One fine day, in the usual morning walk around Green Park, Snowy is stolen from the couple under their very eyes by a ne'er-do-well.

Written from both the owners' and the dog's point of view, The Adventures of a Dog Called Snowy reflects the experiences Snowy had trying to escape and Arthur and Anastasia's attempts to rescue him.

It's a great book for children and adults, and they will enjoy the conversations Snowy has with the other animals he meets during his adventure.

3. Holly and The Snow Fairy, by Genna Rowbotham

Holly loves Christmas. It is the best time of the year!

All year long, Holly has been talking to The Snow Fairy that she believes lives in her special holly bush in the garden. But as the big day approaches, Holly needs the fairy's help.

With a little magical assistance, could this be the most special Christmas ever?

4. Volf: Silver (The Amethyst Triology #1), by Sarah Elliot

What do you get when you cross a vampire with a werewolf? Well, a volf, of course.

Ekata Monet, Volf, daughter of the power-hungry and malign vampire lady Cresta Du Winter, finds herself running for her life from the evil clutches of her feared and hated half-siblings, Siren and Mephistopheles.

After nearly perishing in her attempts to flee those hunting her, Ekata finds herself in the care of a pack of werewolves with the maternal alpha female, Stefina, nursing her back to health. She falls head over heels in love with Fiero, the young handsome werewolf who knows that in Ekata he has found his true mate for life.

As loved up as the young couple are, the evil, blood-thirsty vampires are still hot on their heels and won't give up until they've achieved what they set out to do - kill Ekata and claim her mysterious inner powers for themselves.

5. The Snowgran and Ongalonging, by Sue Hampton

ONGALONGING: In the strange world of ONGALONGING there are greedy volcanoes and flowers with big ideas. There’s a dragon who once blew bubbles, and a broken-nosed fairy with a tool kit who’s heading for the centre of the earth. Not all the unicorns are white and not all the mobes remember who they are. Deep in the bracken is a sour and growling metrognome whose head beats time, and the skies are bright with flutterpasts who live and die in one glorious day. And there to help them all is Oops the clumsy ongalong, sometimes drippy and often confused.Full of colour, humour and riotous imagination, this is a fantasy that’s closer to reality than it seems.

THE SNOWGRAN: A new year starts with a funeral – but bursts into a very special kind of life as Hattie, James and Beth meet a great-gran they hardly knew. Winter turns white, and the figure they build in their garden becomes a snowgran with personality and a past. Whizz is back, and the magic begins. As the children grow closer by moonlight to the remarkable snowgran, their world starts to change. Time is on the move, and love doesn’t end.
