Eight Reasons Why You Should Get Dad A Book For Father’s Day
So, with Father’s Day fast approaching, we all need a few ideas about what to buy. A “World’s Best Dad” coffee mug? A football t-shirt? A six-pack of his favourite beer? Well, while those are all good and well, why not buy Dad a book this year instead?
It’s not going to get broken – all it takes is a slip of the hand and that brand-new mug is suddenly shattered on the floor; books are a bit more durable than that.
He’s not going to drink it away – while he might have a favourite alcoholic beverage (like Baileys, Jack Daniels, Chardonnay, or Fosters), pretty soon that drink will be gone. And then, he’s not going to have anything to remember this special day. Thankfully, books tend to last much longer, as he’s not going to try and eat it – or we hope he’s not!
Cost – this is debatable, depending on how much you want to spend. But while that Manchester United t-shirt might cost you £20, a book is going to cost you half of that. Plus, it won’t shrink in the wash!
It might teach him a thing or two – most of our fathers seem to think they’ve got the world all figured out; Daddy knows best and all that. Well, by getting him a book, you might just be able to show him that there is always more to learn out there, and so much more to explore. Give his imagination a kick start into high gear!
You can re-read a book time and time again – reading a book doesn’t just have to be a one-time thing. You can go back and read that book a hundred times over if you like.
It’s more personal – getting a generic gift is easy and doesn’t take a lot of effort. By getting him a book, you’re showing him just how much you know him. Whether it’s a book about his favourite hobby, an anthology about his all-time rugby team, or giving him the chance to be entertained by a completely new cast of characters, you’re demonstrating just how much attention you’ve been paying.
Shared Interest – you could use that new piece of literature to create some bonding time between you and your father. If you both have a common interest (say fishing or fast cars), or even a genre you both enjoy (like fantasy or horror), then buy him something that could spark off a conversation and discuss your favourite things about the book, theorise about the next plot twist and debate over who the best character was. Just don’t blame us if you can’t agree!
You’ve got so much more variety – there’s only so many t-shirts, ties and pairs of slippers that you can buy one man. But you could buy him a thousand books, and he’d never read the same story twice. Every book is different, so he’ll never be bored as he become engrossed in the latest adventure.
