Celebrating World Book Day
| Features

Every year on World Book Day, families, schools, and communities around the globe come together to celebrate the magic of stories. First established by UNESCO in 1995, World Book Day is a reminder that books are more than just pages bound together they are doorways to imagination, and lifelong learning. With 2026 being the Year of Reading, World Book Day is especially important and relevant!
And when it comes to children, books are especially powerful.
The Magic of a Child’s First Book
I’m sure you can remember your first favourite book, as it will always hold a special place in your heart. Maybe it’s the comforting rhythm of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, the whimsical adventures in Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, or the timeless mischief of Matilda by Roald Dahl.
Children’s books are so important as they are vital for introducing young readers to:
- New vocabulary
- Emotional understanding
- Creativity and imagination
- Problem-solving skills
- Cultural awareness
But more importantly, they introduce children to the joy of reading.
Why Children’s Books Are So Important
1. They Build Empathy
When children step into a character’s shoes, they begin to understand perspectives beyond their own. Stories about friendship, bravery, kindness, and resilience help shape compassionate hearts. They can help children deal with their own emotions, as well as considering the emotions of others around them. Everyone is having their own unique experiences, and stories can help give children a glimpse into a complex inner world that is different to their own.
2. They Strengthen Family Bonds
Reading together creates moments of connection. Bedtime stories become cherished rituals, building security and trust while nurturing a love of language. You can use these moments to share your own childhood favourite stories or discover new ones together.
3. They Spark Curiosity
Books encourage children to ask questions and show them the answer in fun, imaginative, and informative ways. Why is the sky blue? How do animals live in the wild? What makes people different from one another? Stories plant seeds of curiosity that grow into lifelong learning. Books are one of the first avenues for children to be able to develop and grow their own interests, from dinosaurs, to space. They may inspire their passions, or help them develop life-long goals, or open their eyes to future dream jobs!
Celebrating World Book Day
Looking for ways to celebrate? Here are a few simple ideas:
- Dress up as a favourite book character
- Create a cozy reading corner
- Host a mini book swap
- Write and illustrate your own short story
- Visit your local library
Books Create Lifelong Readers
Children who grow up surrounded by books are more likely to become confident readers—and confident thinkers. But beyond academics, reading nurtures imagination. It allows children to dream bigger, see further, and believe in possibilities.
On this World Book Day, let’s celebrate the storytellers, illustrators, teachers, librarians, and parents who place books into little hands. Most of all, let’s celebrate the children who open those books and discover entire worlds waiting inside.
Because today’s young readers are tomorrow’s storytellers.
We hope you’ll share your World Book Day adventures with us.
Happy World Book Day! ????????
