S.F. Chandler Author Interview
S.F. Chandler's debut novel, We The Great Are Misthought, is set to be released on the 24th March 2016. It is the first in a historical trilogy based around the life of Cleopatra's daughter, Cleopatra Selene.
1. How would you describe We the Great are Misthought, and who would you say it is aimed at?
It’s a historical fiction tailored around the actual events surrounding Cleopatra’s daughter’s struggle for restoration and vengeance. It showcases the conflict, gore, politics and injustice of Ancient Rome. It meets a wide range of genres (adventure, history, romance). Lovers of historical fiction would be drawn to this era.
2. What inspired you to write about this era in ancient history, and Cleopatra Selene in particular?
Since I was a child I’ve loved old movies like ‘The Robe, Cleopatra and Ben Hur’. They ignited my fascination with this time period. Whilst I was researching Cleopatra, I discovered that she had a daughter. I was mesmerised by Cleopatra Selene’s history and shocked that her story (let alone existence) was so unknown.
3. How much of the book is based on historical fact, and how much is artistic licence?
I wanted Selene to be as real as she was and I undertook years of research before I began writing, so the majority of this book is based on actual characters and true events.
4. What plans do you have for future writing? Can you give us a small idea of what’s to come in the sequel to We The Great are Misthought?
The story defiantly intensifies. It’s war, bloodshed, rebellion and revenge? by any means possible. Selene’s character grows darker under the brutality. I have completed the Cleopatra Selene trilogy and am currently working on a groundbreaking and controversial novel about a Gladiator.
5. If you could live in one period of history, which would it be and why?
I would love to have lived in the time of Boadicea or Cleopatra. Women in this period are always portrayed as weak and subservient, but THOSE were two women who defied impossible odds in their own different ways. The glamour of Cleopatra’s Egypt appeals to me, but so does the fierce woman warrior.
6. Which five figures from history would you most like to have at you ‘fantasy dinner party’?
Cleopatra Selene (of course), I would want to know if I did her justice. Alexander the Great, Cleopatra, Augustus and Boadicea. On second thought...they might all kill each other!
7. Who are your favourite authors of historical fiction?
Ben Kane, Simon Scarrow, Manda Scott and Philippa Gregory
8. What book are you most looking forward to reading at the moment?
Ben Kane’s new release Hunting the Eagles.
