Cyberwood

Benjamin Sonnek

Fay Butler has always lived in the shadow of greatness. Her grandmother, the High Technomantress of Cyberwood, commands the cyber-plant biome's living technology with grace and power. All Fay wants is to follow in her footsteps - but fate had other plans. Until now.
On the last day of school, everything changes. Gramma is gone, vanished through a malfunctioning teleportational Gate. The system is down. The other villages fall silent. And Cyberwood itself begins to stir.
Fay's dream of becoming a technomantress has just become a reality - but not the way she imagined. With a mysterious new apprentice's band around her neck, her arch-rival, Lily, by her side, and danger closing in, she'll have to set off into the forest's depths to uncover the truth about the Gates, the cyber-plants, and the secrets Gramma may have taken with her.
The forest is alive. The Gates are closed. And Fay has no idea what she's walking into.

ABOUT BENJAMIN SONNEK

Benjamin Sonnek is the editor of the Sauk Centre Herald and an award-winning columnist and journalist. A Benedictine College alumnus, he won their annual short fiction award three times during his studies, and graduated summa cum laude with a degree in English, although he's not entirely sure how. His short stories have appeared in Daily Science Fiction, Aphelion, Perihelion, Edify Fiction, Sonder Midwest, and the Planet Raconteur podcast. He and his wife, Maggie, live with their three little boys in the heart of darkest central Minnesota, where it's actually quite nice when not frozen solid. Follow Benjamin on Twitter and Instagram @ultrasonnek; don't follow him in real life, though, because that raises the suspicion levels of his android sniper-bodyguard ‘Mr. Twitchy.'
