The Book of Numbers

Ludmila Scott

Katrina is a six year old girl who hates mathematics and anything else related to numbers. She has a lovely, caring mother, who is unfortunately too busy going to work to spend much time with her daughter and, anyway, maths isn't her favourite subject either.

Although Katrina usually likes going to school, where kind Mrs Collins makes her feel safe and comfortable, it is the scary Mr Hodges who teaches mathematics she would rather avoid.

One day Katrina is day-dreaming in Mr Hodge's classroom when a mysterious stranger Al Gebra calls her out of class and together they walk into the magic world of numbers. The girl is overwhelmed by the beauty of the number world and even involves her two friends Naomi and Crystal.

ABOUT LUDMILA SCOTT

The author, Ludmila Scott, was born in
Prague, Czechoslovakia. At first she felt
apprehensive about mathematics, but
was lucky because her mother worked
as a book-keeper and made the subject
look interesting. At the age of 11, a
friend's mother asked if she would help
her son understand arithmetic. Ludmila
agreed and at that moment her career in
teaching mathematics from its basics to
‘A' level standard had begun. Her main
objective was to help pupils of all ages
to like the subject and the magic of the
world of Numbers.
