Con Animo (With Spirit)

Eduardo Saldana Cantu

Chalo's pursuit of higher education takes him far from the close-knit world of his family, where ‎tradition, faith, and hard work have long defined success. As he pushes forward, earning advanced ‎degrees and moving farther away, both geographically and emotionally, his parents, Papa Angel ‎and Mama Lupita, struggle to understand the value of his choices. They question the purpose of his ‎long years in academia, concerned about the widening gap between his life and the life they ‎envisioned for him. Torn between the love for his family and his drive to forge a new path, Chalo ‎grapples with the guilt of distancing himself from his roots. The story explores themes of cultural ‎identity, generational conflict, and the challenges of integration into a new world while trying to ‎hold on to the old. In the end, the enduring spirit of the Cantú family-living life con animo-is ‎tested as they navigate an uncertain future.‎

ABOUT EDUARDO SALDANA CANTU

As a clinical cytogeneticist using genetic methods to ‎diagnose heritable disorders in pediatric and cancer ‎patients, Eduardo Saldaña Cantú dedicated nearly ‎forty years of service. He was director of major ‎academic and commercial clinical laboratories. ‎Importantly, he also contributed to the development ‎of new tests and a better understanding of these ‎diseases. He loved his profession, but he also wanted ‎to honor his father's wish to write about the family's ‎history. Dr. Cantú recently retired, and as he had ‎promised his father, he is now writing about past ‎times when things were so different, but important ‎enough not to be forgotten.‎
