My Life in Higher Education

Charles DeMotte

In the memoir, My Life in Higher Education, Charles DeMotte reflects with wit and honesty ‎on his extensive career in academia. Viewing his experiences from different angles, ‎Professor DeMotte brings to light his multi-faceted background as a student, researcher, ‎and teacher. He also comments on changes in the academic environment which he has ‎witnessed over the years, and to its possible direction.‎

Dr. DeMotte thinks that a fundamental problem in society, reflected in higher education, is ‎the failure to think critically, which has underscored his teaching mission. While Dr. ‎DeMotte recognizes the impact that AI and information technology is having and will have ‎on higher education, he calls for a measured approach to this transformation. He also ‎thinks that education should promote values, such as right human relations, to help ‎students become better citizens.‎
