Catrienne McGuire's book is based on being part of an army family. She used her counselling skills to listen to families and research the advice that was given to soldiers in need.
During this time, she saw soldiers return from deployment in war zones and the changes in their character resulting from the trauma inflicted upon them and their colleagues. Particularly noticeable was the effect these changes had on the soldiers' families.
It is because of her own experiences and information she gathered that she wanted to portray what life can be like for families within the military environment.
