Bernard Rourke
Bernard Rourke, the seventh of eight children, was born in Liverpool. The rampant disparity in the character and personalities of his siblings led to his life-long fascination with the human mind and behaviour.
He obtained a BA degree and a teaching diploma from Sheffield University. The Army sent him to London and Hong Kong Universities to study Mandarin Chinese where he qualified as an interpreter. He then spent a number of years in Hong Kong directing Chinese language training of military and diplomatic personnel from Britain and Commonwealth countries. He retired from the Army with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
