A Panoply of Lies

Terry Pickett

The year is 1814, not long since the bombardment of Baltimore by the mighty British fleet.  While ‎recovering from the ravages of a fever that robbed her of her family, young Virtue Calvert is taken ‎prisoner by human traffickers.  She awakens in the narrow cabin of a strange ship, prisoner to two ‎mysterious strangers who have dressed her in male garb.  Her sense of helplessness turns to resolve ‎when she realizes that her captors have unwittingly given her the means to escape.  Henceforth she ‎will be George Calvert!  On reaching Charleston, she flees on foot into the Carolina upcountry.  ‎There the dislocations of war have left the inhabitants at the mercy of roving bandit bands.  ‎Survival depends upon wit, skill and speed.  A Panoply of Lies is a historical story about a girl’s ‎struggle for survival and identity in a war-torn world.‎
