We asked some of our authors this question:  Which is your favourite romance novel, or favourite couple from a book? - and here are some of the answers!

Claire Merchant

There are so many great couples in literature, but my favourite couple from a book is Rose Hathaway and Dimitri Belikov from the Vampire Academy series (by Richelle Mead). I think the two are a great couple, because they’re not only strong as a couple, they’re strong on their own. Their relationship is a partnership, and I like how Rose doesn’t need saving, but Dimitri still comes to her rescue, and Rose also saves Dimitri too. They take turns to lift each other up, and they never give up on each other, even when things are at there absolute worst. They fight for each other, and they fight alongside each other. They teach each other, and they believe in each other. I love how their relationship evolves.

It is very difficult to choose a favourite love story, but amongst the best would be, Far from the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy. Bathsheba, the heroine, is spirited and initially very naive. I like the fact that she is not perfect and she makes mistakes both in her judgement and actions. The three men in her life circle her, like moths around a flame, with disastrous results. And who can forget Gabriel Oak's earnest declaration, 'I shall do one thing in this life - and one thing certain - that is, love you, and long for you, and keep wanting you till I die.'

Dolly and John by L.J. Whitehead is a lovely read and would actually be a lovely Valentine's read! Click here for buying options!

Vikki Dark

The love story of the highest order for me is Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. My reason for this selection is due to the startlingly tragic turn the tale takes. Heathcliff is the perfect rugged gentlemen who would die for Catherine but being destined for the life of a Lady, they sadly were not meant to be. However, as children they ran wildly on the heath, dissappearing for hours upon hours. He, the dark haired gypsy stray found by her father on an long excursion to London, became her soul-mate. They would seek trouble wherever they could find it, laughing amongst themselves, dreaming together by night. The wrecklessness of pure love was snatched from them by the expectations of adulthood and Heathcliff lost her to a gentlemen of status and provider of a newfound easy life. This ignited an anger in Heathcliff so powerful that he stopped at nothing to wreak havoc against what he saw as the evil that snatched his love. Catherine died from emotional infidelity whilst weakened by her lover's violence. His eternal punishment for not letting go.

My favourite literary love affair is the ‘bromance’ between Pooh and Piglet. I don’t think there are any books that offer a better example of an enduring relationship between two unlikely candidates than the Winnie-the-Pooh series. Little chaps with big hearts, that take tiny steps yet go on big adventures. And throughout it all, they remain the firmest of friends without so much as a bad word for one another. My love for these two and their wise words has endured through childhood and their quotes and sayings are as relevant today as they were, well, let’s just say… a long time ago. Pooh and Piglet - what’s not to love?
