We love to use books for escapism. Just something light and fun to block out the rest of the world for an hour or so. But sometimes the books we read reflect painful truths about the world around us and literature can be an excellent means to explore these tough and sometimes taboo subjects.
Western Daughter by Jay Joseph
Jay Joseph’s debut novel follows the story of Nadia, a young Muslim girl living in London. Torn between her family, her faith and her desire to live as she wants all make for a gripping read. The book deals with subjects such as interracial relationships and female genital mutilation.
Free by Fiona Morgan
Ava, the main character of Free, believes she owes everything to her boyfriend. She is also firm in her belief that every time he gets angry and lashes out at her, that it is solely her fault. The book deals with the subject of Domestic Violence and Ava’s struggle to break free and to start believing in herself again.
All That You Can Leave Behind by Neil Leatherbarrow
Sometimes authors don’t need to fictionalise tragedy; their own lives are already full of grief. Neil Leatherbarrow’s daughter was a beautiful young girl and a talented dancer – having been a cast member in the West End musical Billy Elliot – when she was killed in a road traffic accident. Neil writes about her death, his grief and his attempt to work his way back to a sense of normality.
Not A Leg To Stand On by Mary O’Brien
Another author’s true life story of overcoming adversity. Mary was just two years old when she lost both of her legs in a farming accident and was Ireland's first double amputee to be fitted with artificial limbs. Her book explores growing up in a large family where her accident was never discussed and her years as a schoolgirl, into adulthood and right up to being awarded an MBE.
Escaped From Syria by Sarah Hussain
Sarah Hussain’s book takes perhaps one of the most pressing issues of the modern world and puts it into a fictional novel. Having worked with refugees from Syria, Sarah was inspired to bring their stories to the world. Escaped From Syria is the story of a girl who has lost her family in a chemical weapons attack in Damascus.
