Top Five - Classic books you read as a child and probably haven’t picked up since!

Enid Blyton – The Magic Faraway Tree series is a collection of four books, The Enchanted Forest, The Magic Faraway Tree, The Folk of The Faraway Tree and Up The Faraway Tree. These books were probably read to you as a child. The adventures of Jo, Bessie and Fanny were and still are very exciting. Wondering what was going to happen each time they climbed up the tree and what land would be at the top.

The Railway Children – The Railway Children is a book with many grown up themes that, as a child, probably would have gone straight over your head. It is a book about adventure. The children befriend a man who ultimately is the reason they get their father back home. The themes you can see as an adult are the importance of family, hope and optimism and bravery. As a child, the adventure takes your mind away from the base of the storyline. Living right next to railway station, the adventure of being able to go where you want is exciting.

The Secret Garden – Mary Lennox, the main character, is seemingly antagonistic to start off with. As an adult you feel sorry for her as she had a troubled childhood and moved many times. The major adult themes you uncover are sensibility and overcoming trauma. As a child the story is exciting, it’s about a secret place Mary finds, a secret flower garden. Mary also adds anthropomorphic qualities to a robin who becomes her best friend.

Pippi Longstocking – Pippi Longstocking is the superhero of the 20th century. Her superhuman strength makes her an exciting, loveable character that children look up to. She has a Peter Pan like quality to her, children can relate to this as what child wants to grow up? This book is probably lost as you grow up, it is very much a kid’s book. You wouldn’t go back and read it over and over again if you didn’t need to, but at the time it is exciting, she can lift up a horse with one hand, what child wouldn’t love that?

The Velveteen Rabbit – The Velveteen Rabbit has a desire to become real. Like any child's thoughts, the idea of your favourite stuffed toy becoming real is a dream. As a child you read the books and you go through the many emotions as everyone knows what it is like to lose a toy. It will always be a classic, it makes you feel all kinds of emotions and makes you really think about what your toys do when you aren’t looking.

All of these books are books that, even though they are classics, are probably forgotten about and are currently sitting on your book shelf next to more classics that are also collecting dust. You haven’t read them in years but it would be book murder if you were to throw them away with all the memories you made with them. You keep them so one day you can read them again to your children or your grandchildren and hope that through their, hopeful, excitement, you can relive your childhood years reading the books and you can fall in love with them all over again.
