15 November, 2022

The past weekend was about remembering and honoring the wide range of military personnel who have served in the armed forces. Around the world, many countries have paid their respects to those who have been a part of the military, from Remembrance Day, which is celebrated across many Commonwealth and European counties, to Veterans Day in America.

For today’s blog post, we spotlight a selection of real-life stories from the perspective of military personnel and their first-hand experience of the challenges they face.

From our biography and nonfiction section, we have:

Adventures in Aviation

A fascinating glimpse into the life and career of a military and civil pilot.

Spanning forty years, Wing Commander Roy Gamblin's work as a military pilot took him to fly fighter/ground attack Hunters in the Far East. In the 1970s, he was a fast jet instructor in Gnat, Hunter and Hawk aircraft at RAF Valley and, for two years, was with the Royal Norwegian Air Force on a Northrop F5 squadron. His subsequent, broad experience as a British Aerospace airline training captain, examiner, test pilot and project manager, working with many airlines worldwide.

My Life in Trouble - Confessions of an Army Doctor

After a computer error identified his so-called ‘drink problem' and he ends up in hospital suffering from concussion (two totally unconnected incidents!), Mike's journey is tempered with a hefty dose of self-deprecating wit mixed with a genuine and touching commitment to the welfare of his patients.

From the tragic to the terrifying and the farcical to the funny, this is a gloriously irreverent memoir written by a real modern-day hero.

BEHIND THE WIRE: A PRISONER OF WAR IN NAZI GERMANY

Alan and Peggy Horton were married in 1940, before Alan was on a ship bound by a circuitous route for Egypt, a journey of two months from Glasgow.

This correspondence has been described by The Imperial War Museum as one of the most complete sets of letters they have ever seen written between husband and wife. They recount the story of life in wartime Britain, highlighting the pain and separation of war but enlivened by love and hope for a lonely young bride. They also outline the frustrations and boredom for fighting men, forced to sit idly as the war raged with only occasional snippets of news.
