Mark Durman released his thriller collection in 2017. Starting with Cash in Transit, he later released The Warehouse, and finally, Verification. We felt it was time to catch up with the author and find out how his life has changed since he became a published author.

Did you always dream of becoming an author?
I think the idea was always in the back of my mind but, until recently, it was overshadowed by my professional priorities.
What was your first job?
A brigadier in the British Army Intelligence Corps
How did you come about writing your book? Was that your intention or did you start writing for fun?
My job(s) required me to write regularly, but mostly professional papers, e.g. military appreciations, business and political assessments. Recently, I’ve discovered the joy and the freedom of writing novels, where I can let my imagination loose. Although I write fiction, all my books are based on my life’s experiences and the story-lines run close to real facts.
What was your life like before you became an author?
Very committed, first as a military officer and, later, as a security director in corporate business.
Did you face any struggles before becoming an author? If so, how did you overcome them?
I faced no more struggles than the normal challenges of professional and domestic life. I’ve been so lucky to have lived in many different countries and to have experienced varying cultures, customs and languages. I try to profit from this when describing the characters and situations in my books.
Now that you are a published author, how has your life changed, if at all?
There have been no major changes – as yet! But the reward of having my books published encourages me to keep on writing!
Can you please describe a typical day in your life now?
I don’t really have a “typical day”. I tend to write early in the morning, and often get up at around six am, and write through till lunch time. When I do this, I always try to get in some good physical exercise later in the day, and each week I climb in the mountains with my walking group.
What is your most memorable moment of your life as an author?
It has to be receiving the printed copies of my first book.
How would you best sum up your experience with Pegasus Publishers?
Very educational! I have learnt that producing a novel requires considerable time, effort and patience by both the writer and the publisher. It’s very much a team effort!
