Getting Children to Read

As a publisher we encourage all ages to read. We love to see people sharing books and reading to each other and what a perfect time of the year to do this. Instead of sitting and watching a film on Christmas, why don’t you read a book, or two, or three!

It can be hard to get a child to read. Especially with all the new technology that is about. What child would want to pick a book up when they can play Skylanders, Minecraft or Pokémon. So, children like interactive things, that is clear to see, if your child is a tech robot and their tab, laptop, mobile phone (yes even a phone!) never leaves their hand, maybe you can try an interactive book. There are many interactive books out there, whether that is one with little pull out levers or flaps. Some books (like an edition of The Gruffalo) have a sound pad where you can make the noises of the characters and the weather along with the book.

Here are some books that are interactive, they are for the younger child, but we still like them now!

Gruffalo Sound Book by Julia Donaldson

Where's Spot by Eric Hill

Maisy's Big Flap Book by Lucy Cousins

Here are four methods to help get your children to read!

1. Lead by Example. If your child sees you reading lots, then they will learn that reading is a fun hobby to have.

2. Talk about books with your child. What are they reading, what is happening in the book, engage them in a conversation where they have to really know the book well to be able to answer the questions.

3. Let your child choose a book. Any size book is a start. Letting your child have free reign means they can work out for themselves what genre they enjoy and what sort of books don’t engage them.

4. Read to your child. From a young age you should read to your child, it will not only help get them into reading but will also help with their personal ability to read and speak.
