Mothers’ Day is fast approaching and many of us will be searching for a way to show the most important woman in our life how much we love her. We think books make a much better gift than flowers, here are eight reasons why.

  1. Nobody is allergic to books – or at least, nobody that we know of.
  2. Books don’t die after a few days – sometimes characters die and it feels like your heart has been ripped out, but that’s another matter.
  3. You can reread a book time and time again – you’re hardly going to get a dead bunch of flowers out of the rubbish several times are you?
  4. A book is more personal – you’re not following the masses. You truly know the likes and dislikes of the mother figure in your life, what genres she reads, who her favourite author is, the topics and ideas she just loves to read about.
  5. You don’t need to worry about thorns on books – just watch out for papercuts!
  6. Cost – this one is debatable. Depending on the book, whether you’re getting a hardback, paperback or special edition, and where you buy it from, books aren’t always exactly cheap. But, let’s say the current cost of a paperback is around £8.99. A bunch of flowers from the florists could easily cost £20 or more, and with the reusable factor we’ve already mentioned, we think books are much better value for money.
  7. Books won’t drop petals everywhere – they also won’t get pollen on your clothes or your carpet.
  8. Shared Interest – get your mum a book that you’ve read and loved, or buy yourself a copy of the same book you’re getting her. You can talk about it together and discuss your theories on what you think the next plot twist will be. You might enjoy it so much you may decide to start up a two-person book club!
