Dal Cousans recently released his debut book, Survivor: 1851 Insurrection From New Orleans to Cuba, a biography about his ancestors. We wanted to catch up with Dal and see how life had changed since becoming a published author.

Did you always dream of becoming an author?
No, I didn’t think I would actually become an author. My girlfriend, Cindy, suggested I should write a book after reading the article printed about William Cousans in 1913. After reading, I wanted everyone to know about the history unknown to me and to many others.
What was your first job?
I worked as a draftsman/designer for a local sprinkler company (fire protection) for commercial buildings.
How did you come about writing your book? Was that your intention or did you start writing for fun?
After reading the interview, I started to learn more after researching at various locations. I began to learn about the history that was involved in William’s life, especially in New Orleans since I live here. I started to write little paragraphs. I became obsessed with finding out everything that he went through. I was truly amazed that he came out alive. One page turned into two and from then on, I just kept typing.
What was your life like before you became an author?
Living in New Orleans is never a dull moment. With Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest and countless other festivals, you can never be bored. Spending time with my son, Kyle, is always the best. Cindy and I share the abundance of the history that New Orleans has to offer.
Did you face any struggles before becoming an author? If so, how did you overcome them?
I would say the researching of endless files would be the struggle. But patience was a definite virtue. Never give up!
Now that you are a published author, how has your life changed, if at all?
Since the book was just released, I am excited to share with people about the history involved with my book. So far my life has not changed, but I am anticipating that it will be soon enough.
Can you please describe a typical day in your life now?
I work five days a week and, on weekends, I am either enjoying a festival or visiting downtown New Orleans, known as the French Quarter. I also work on my Bonsai trees by pruning, shaping and designing them.
What is your most memorable moment of your life as an author?
There were a few moments during the research when I found information that was complete surprise to me.
In a few words, how would you review your experience with Pegasus Publishers?
My experience with Pegasus has surpassed all my expectations! They were quick with their responses and worked with me throughout the whole experience. I would definitely recommend them to anyone who would like a book published.
