All you need to know about bookshops
Bookshops all work in the same way. They will only stock the books that are in demand. They do this because they only have a hundred/few hundred spaces to give to newer books; stocking a book they cannot see any reception or demand for, is a risky business move.
Any bookshop will usually be hesitant to stock a book unless it:
- Sells well.
- Is already in the book charts.
- Is regularly asked for by customers in the store.
- If the book or author is of local interest
So, the idea is to create the demand, only then will the shops be interested. This can be done by:
- Sending press releases to interested reviewers.
- Social media posts – creating banners and videos for the book.
- A giveaway on social media or your website.
- Free eBook giveaways on Amazon – this means you won’t be selling much, but your book may go into the charts, giving it more visibility.
- Approaching local news and radiostations to generate some interest.
- Encouraging family and friends to buy the book to generate more demand. Also, ask them to leave a review once they have read it (if bought through Amazon/online).
The above will hopefully generate sales or interest which will, in turn, make your book more appealing to bookshops.
We work with wholesalers for bookstores. Some of these include: Gardners and Ingram. They purchase books from us at a high discount, usually between 30% and 60% off. They are also given sale or return terms, which means if the book does not sell with them, they can return it to us within an agreed time, usually ninety days. We can give more accurate sales data after a royalty statement is issued.
