Today’s blog post spotlights author John Horton and his book, Behind the Wire: A Prisoner of War in Nazi Germany, which came out in June 2022.

Inspired by the letters of his parents during the Second World War, author John Horton uses these letters as a base for his book Behind the Wire: A Prisoner of war in Nazi Germany.

Peggy and Alan Horton’s letters, in chronological order, are collected in the book depicting first-hand experiences of the war.

Although the letters featured in the book showcase a first-hand experience of British soldier Alan Horton and his wife, Peggy, there is a love story between the newlyweds who are forced to deal with being separated by the international conflict affecting the world during the early 1940s. From the initial planning of a wartime wedding to fighting on the ground during the North African Campaign and being captured by the Germans, living as newlyweds during the war had its many challenges and battles, with most not even featuring front-line conflict.

Peggy and Alan Horton, the parents of author John Horton, whose love and wartime experiences are depicted in their letters to one another.
