Maddison Amy Burford, the author of Shadows, released her book in March 2020. We wanted to catch up with the new author and see how life had been treating her since she was published.
Did you always dream of becoming an author?
Writing has always been a passion of mine but writing a book and it being published I always thought was a dream. When I finished Shadows a part of me thought, well, that was fun let me store it away for no one to see. However, I think it’s important to follow your dreams and that’s what I did.
What was your first job?
Like many my first job was a paper round. But the one that paid the bills was a facilities assistant at a marketing company far from anything I have ever wanted to do but I gained a lot of life experiences there.
How did you come about writing your book? Was that your intention or did you start writing for fun?
Shadows started from a dream I had years ago, the character for some reason stuck in my head. On one long commute in London I sat twiddling my thumbs as an announcement suggested we would be stuck in the tube for a while, so, I picked up my phone opened notes and started to unravel the story. From then on, every commute or spare moment I had I would write or drop-down thoughts, until one day I had a book.
It was always fun for me I never thought anything would come of it.
What was your life like before you became an author?
Not much has changed since my book has been published apart from having a lot more people message me telling me they have read it.
I am also a freelance graphic designer, so, like before I still work. My life wouldn’t be complete if I weren’t able to be creative daily.
Did you face any struggles before becoming an author? If so, how did you overcome them?
I never wrote Shadows to become an author but writing a full book and realising you want it to be published always comes with struggles. Shadows took a while to write and get published as writers block appeared or self-doubt crept in, which left me feeling lost and what was the point.
Something always brought me back to it though, I think it’s important not to push things because some days are always going to be better than others.
Now that you are a published author, how has your life changed, if at all?
Life hasn’t changed much for me, apart from having to talk about my book a lot more and people pushing to see if there will be a second or what happens with the characters.
But it is still early days and we’re in the middle of a pandemic, so who knows.
What is your most memorable moment of your life as an author?
The most memorable moment is getting tagged in that first social media post, where someone has read and enjoyed my book. I don’t think any feeling is better.
In a few words, how would you review your experience with Pegasus Publishers?
Pegasus have been a delight to work with, everything moved like clockwork. They have been able to bring my book to life and get it into places I could have only dreamed about.
This being my first time being published and I have had a lot of questions, however, everyone has been answered promptly, always putting me at complete ease.
Thank you!
Why did you choose Pegasus Publishers?
When researching publishers, I had heard some great things, so thought I would try my luck. Luckily for me, they picked up my book.
