5 of Our Favourite Childhood Reads

We all have some old favourites that we fell in love with a children, and continue to hold close to our hearts, even in adulthood. So, we've decided to list five our our favourite childhood reads.

1) Guess How Much I Love You, by Sam McBratney (illustrated by Anita Jeram)

An all-time favourite of ours, Guess How Much I Love You is a wonderful children's book about two hares (a baby hare and a parent hare) comparing how much they love each other. Each time, the baby attempts to out-do his parent, eventually claiming that he loves them 'right up to the moon', only for his parent to say: 'I love you right up to the moon - and back'. A charming little story that we could never forget.

2) The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis

A classic, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a fantastic children's fantasy novel, about a world found inside a wardrobe. Set in World War II, four children are evacuated to the country, where they discover the magical wardrobe and the world of Narnia inside. For anyone who hasn't yet read this - and you must have been hiding somewhere, if that's the case - then get a copy sharpish!

3) Anything by Jacqueline Wilson

Perhaps this is cheating slightly, but we couldn't possibly choose just one! As a child, we loved Jacqueline Wilson - everything from Candyfloss, to The Suitcase Kid, to The Lottie Project. A wonderful children's writer, with some occasional adult theme, Jacqueline Wilson's books made up a large portion of our childhood.

4) Black Beauty, by Anna Sewell

A book published in 1877, but still loved to this day, Black Beauty is a timeless book, enjoyed by both children and adults. The story is set as an auto-biographical memoir, told from the point of view of a horse called Black Beauty; each short chapter recounts an incident in Black Beauty's life containing a moral typically related to the kindness, sympathy, and understanding treatment of horses. A brilliant book that is always worth a second read.

5) Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, by J.K. Rowling

Yes, this one had to be on our list - you can't have a list of childhood reads and not find HP on there somewhere! For those who aren't aware (and we're not sure how this could be), Harry Potter is a best-selling children's series about a boy who discovers he's a wizard and is sent to Hogwarts, the Magical School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There, he faces a whole new life - and a new set of challenges - whilst learning how to control and enhance his wizarding powers. The Philosopher's Stone is the first in the 7-book series and, if you haven't read it...well, how is that possible? Go and get a copy!
