Through Cloud and Sunshine: Galway to Nice on the E2 Trail

John Pucknell

Failing to finish a walk from Land’s End to John o’Groats due to an arthritic knee, John feared his long distance walking career was over. Despite only being in his sixties (an age he once thought very old) this seemed to signal a slippery slide into ill health, senility and death.

Faced with the choice of ageing gracefully in front of daytime TV, or forcing his declining body to continue trekking over fields and mountains, he curiously chose the latter. Not content with gentle trails, he set out to walk 4,500 kilometres (2800 miles) along the E2 European Long Distance Path from Galway in Ireland to Nice in the south of France.

There were a few difficulties. Firstly the route of the E2 did not start in Ireland, and, secondly, its final section, the famous GR5 through the French Alps, had a few hills which his knee might object to.

About Author

John Pucknell, author

John Pucknell

The author is a self-described, ordinary, middle-aged bloke with a healthy dislike of routine. Following a career in engineering, which included a little too much desk work for his liking, he immediately launched himself into a more active lifestyle in retirement, in which chaffing thighs and sore shoulders figured prominently. Not content with walking the likes of the Pennine Way, he turned his sights to Europe, completing the E4 long-distance trail from Spain to Cyprus. After a brief reunion with his long-suffering wife and dogs, he embarked on his next adventure. This book is the result.
