Monica Callan

Stained Glass follows young Zoe as she grows up in early 1970s Northern Ireland. The streets are filled with parades, bonfires and bright colours, but they are also marked by tension, fear and division. Zoe looks at the world with imagination and excitement, yet life at home is much more difficult. Her mother feels trapped and dreams of something different. Her father carries his own secrets. Their family begins to weaken under the strain.

Zoe tries to make sense of the adults around her while the city descends into violence.

As she learns more about the world, she discovers that life is far more complicated than she once believed.

Gentle, honest and emotional, Stained Glass tells the story of a girl who is trying to hold on to hope while her family and her country face a time of great change.

I grew up in Derry during the troubles, a child from a mixed marriage and faced many of the problems which Zoe encounters. I left Derry to study in Liverpool and Glasgow, where I met my husband. We lived in Scotland for many years and brought up our four children there before recently moving back to Ireland.
