Bedtime Books For Adults
| Features
We all need to unwind after a long day, and what better way than with a good book? But, you don't need a book that's going to keep you up all night, or one that's going to bore you to sleep; you need something soothing, relaxing and fun. So here are some of our recommended bedtime books for adults.
1) Life on Mars, by Tracy K. Smith
Smith creates some amazing images with her words, and Life on Mars will paint the most beautiful pictures. Since it's poetry, you won't have to spend an hour reading - you can just choose one or two poems to go through. And Smith's poetry is so well-written and pretty, it'll have you quickly drifting off into a world a colourful dreams.
2) The Name of the Wind, by Patrick Rothfuss
It seems odd to recommend a medival fantasy as one to help you drift into the land of nod. Too much going on and too many big battles that you have to pay attention to. However, The Name of the Wind holds its own, as it is not only has sword battles and duelling, it also has fantastic description. The narrative is so well-written and in depth that you feel as if you are a part of the world, surrounded by the scenery that Rothfuss creates. The book flows very well and you'll quickly be drifting off into a whole new world.
3) The Sun Also Rises, by Ernest Hemingway
Hemingway's direct (and somewhat dry) narrative can prove to be very soothing, as the author pulls you into his world and helps you to forget the troubles of the day. Of course, if you find his style boring, that might just put you to sleep as well! Either way, his calm approach is a good way to relax.
4) Walden, by Henry David Thoreau
Thoreau's descriptions of the wilderness and nature will help to calm any troubled mind. A good book to pick up if you're not interested in fiction, or don't want to fall too deep into a convoluted plot. His spiritual language and accounts of living in the wild will help to calm the reader and create a sense of natural peace.
5) Sit Up, Stand Up, Speak Up: An Emotional Short Story Collection, by Sarah Hussain
Yes, one of our own! This book is a collection of short stories that ask the reader to think about the bigger picture; to step away from what we know and think about what could be. Although the stories are insightful and deep, they are also short, meaning you don't have to commit too long before you get tired. Hussain's writing will peak the interest of any reader, and leave them thinking about the 'what ifs' as they drift off.
