In 1886, Montclair County, Virginia, was still experiencing the repercussions of the Civil War. In a very different aspect, the famous Confederate soldier, Professor Jeremiah Kimble Montague, amuses his students at Preston College and at the same time a terrifying new power is emerging. The Brotherhood, consisting of ten hooded men, are riding at night and sending out reports of their brutal actions which the morning newspapers consume The hopeful cadet, Isaac Freeman, looks up to Professor Montague, who is referred to as 'The Lame Lion of Lewisburg',” wishing to imitate his heroism and win the notice of the beautiful Rebeccah, his daughter. But as Isaac gets more involved in the professor’s world, he then starts noticing the sinister side underneath the genteel mask. With a murderer at large and an underground society closing in, Isaac will have to face the perilous reality: in the New South, the devil is sometimes a gentle man.
