Ana Goncalves

Ana Maria Oliveira Gonçalves was born on the island of Pico in 1968 and spent her early years between the Azores and the United States. With a lifelong passion for languages, she holds degrees in Modern Languages and Literatures and in Education, as well as a postgraduate qualification in simultaneous interpreting and translation. She has worked as a conference interpreter, freelance translator, and educator, teaching English since 1996.

A former section head at Imprensa Nacional–Casa da Moeda and later vice-president of the Municipality of São Roque do Pico, Ana Maria eventually returned to her roots, where she now balances teaching with writing, painting, and involvement in tourism and heritage projects. Deeply connected to her community, she has also dedicated many years to volunteer work. Her life and work reflect a love for culture, storytelling, and the simple beauty of island life.

Suddenly one day, the wind stopped and did not blow for many days. All the people in the neighbourhood were worried about what they would eat if they couldn't get their corn milled.
