Gary is a Vietnam Veteran whose decorations include a Purple Heart, Bronze Star with V Device and Combat Infantryman's Badge. He is a certified public accountant and was an adjunct professor at the University of Virginia and George Mason University. He grew up in Philadelphia and Northern Virginia.
