Why Clothing Changed

Shane Naomi Adler

In the beginning, everyone in the western world wore a loose ankle-length gown.  But suddenly, after centuries, the shapeless garment was altered to emphasize differences between men and women, rich and poor.  Those new clothes also initiated an everlasting process of periodic changes in forms of dress.

Why Clothing Changed explores the dreams and ambitions of ordinary people who changed the look and structure and meaning of clothes.  Mirroring society, that fluid process lasted from the first form-fitting styles of the late Middle Ages until the 1860s, when the first department stores introduced the modern concept of yearly changes we call fashion.
