A young girl has not only an unusual name but also an extraordinary, undiscovered gift: she can communicate with penguins. An unfortunate accident brings Emma Carter (Emmilou) face to face with these curious birds at her local zoo. She soon discovers that every penguin has a role within the colony, and Tiberius, their leader, forms an unexpected friendship with her, recognising that a force of nature has bound her to them.
One misfit penguin—whom Emmilou affectionately names Scruffy—believes he is a gymnast and fuels his acrobatic energy by eating enormous quantities of… well… anything, really. Chasing after a misplaced fish gives him the perfect opportunity to escape the colony by sneaking into the Carter family car, completely unnoticed by its passengers. What follows is chaos in the Carter household as Scruffy makes himself at home.
Emmilou takes charge of the birds’ welfare and ultimately becomes the key to returning Scruffy to the colony—all while keeping everything hidden from their nosy neighbour.
