Francis Riggs, the youngest of five, was born in Brookville, MD, just a year after World War I ended. He grew up on a farm with his parents, sister and three brothers. He dreamed of being good at something and moving up in life.
After graduating high school and attending some college, he enlisted in the Army. The structure and opportunities for advancement took him from being an ordinary soldier to an officer and accomplished pilot. Although he longed to be a fighter pilot, the Army chose him to fly the B-24 and sent him to Italy to join a bomber squadron.
He was ready to be a leader who could command others and face danger with a sense of duty. And there came a time when he had no choice but to keep on with his mission.
