Phil Avery lives outside Cambridge with his wife and their two dogs. He has worked variously as a Civil Engineer, University Lecturer, Construction Contracts Manager and Mathematics Teacher over his career.
Phil Avery, as a young engineer at the age of twenty-three, finds himself accepting a role as a site engineer in Faranah, Guinea.
As a qualified Engineer, Phil Avery moves into teaching at his local further education college. Despite his best efforts to prepare his students for future roles in construction and trying to maintain his failing marriage to Bella, he becomes disillusioned and depressed.
