The author went straight from school into the army, aged sixteen, in 1983 and left in 1996 as staff sergeant in the Royal Logistics Corps. On demob, he initially settled into a logistics managerial position but then realised that he enjoyed life more behind a steering wheel rather than chained to an office chair. In 2000, he upgraded his Class 2 Licence to Class 1 and has mostly been employed in the ‘tramper' role ever since.
