The Anomaly or Baron Fitzwarbleshaw's illusion
This tragi-comical novel portrays the quixotic attempts by one Henry Fitzwarbleshaw, a plumber by profession, to prove to the world that he is the scion of a noble lineage and entitled to the barony. There is only a slight anomaly in his family tree around the eighteenth century that seems to undermine that claim. Henry's mother, a possessive and eccentric widow, has always insisted that this was due to skulduggery on the part of the earl's branch of the family, as witnessed by the removal of a certain page from the parish registry at the time. Their own branch of the family has long since degenerated into genteel poverty. A likeable, but foolish character, prone to telling tall stories to any captive audience, Henry will lurch from one social gaff to the next in his endeavour to comply with his mother's entreaties to action. He falls for a cruel hoax.
