About

Marie-Stéphane Vaugien

Marie-Stéphane Vaugien was torn away from her natal Algeria at age five! She then experienced her first plane trip in the ‘mythical’ Caravelle. And her first feeling of exile too… She landed first in Marseille, and later in Paris, where she still lives today.

Despite prolonged studies (seven years) at the Sorbonne University, which led her to a PhD in Afro-American literature and civilisation, under the watchful eye of her professor, Michel Fabre, she became a cabin crew member for Air France in order to ensure a roof over her head, a profession she practised for thirty years.

A lifelong lover of words, Marie-Stéphane writes short stories, songs and poetry. Today, she offers us the testimony of almost a lifetime with overwhelming sincerity.

  • Albatross' Blues

In this poignant narrative, from laughter to tears – life, in other words – a seasoned stewardess ‎reflects on her thirty-year career, revealing the fleeting nature of connections and the profound ‎isolation that often accompanies a life in the skies. Through vivid anecdotes, she recalls her ‎early days of navigating strict uniforms and demanding duties, contrasting it with her evolving ‎perspective on the job’s true essence. From the excitement of a first flight to the bittersweet ‎memories of fleeting friendships, her story intertwines personal moments with broader ‎reflections on human connection and solitude. As she journeys from bustling cities to serene ‎whale-watching excursions, she grapples with the tension between the glamour of travel and the ‎emptiness of perpetual transience. Ultimately, her tale is a meditation on belonging, revealing ‎that despite the vast distances and countless encounters, her true home lies within the shared ‎humanity of our planet.‎
