Johan Stiel was born in 1977 to two book enthusiasts who at the time worked as a schoolteacher and a social worker in Karlskrona, Sweden, where he grew up and where he now works as a librarian. Before moving back to his hometown, he studied English translation, then library and information science, at Linnaeus University in Växjö, and in 2008, he took a class at Gotham Writers' Workshop in New York while living in Queens.
