Cullie Prosser-Jones was born in 1936 in Hamilton, New Zealand, and raised in Pukemiro, an outback coal mining town, in the Waikato. Her working life revolved around communication, including three years' service in the Radio and Radar section of the RNZAF. In 1957, three years of her life were spent living at RAF Base Tengah in Singapore during the Malaysian Confrontation. She won the ‘Senior New Zealander of the Year Award' in 2012 for researching and writing four volumes of the history of the Waikato coal mines. She is a talented artist who has been commissioned and exhibited.
