Alex Hai, from Algerian and German decent, resides in Venice, Italy and the first transgender gondolier in history, is also a trilingual writer and filmmaker. After studying visual communication in Hamburg, Hai expanded his creative work into poetry. His lyrical poems explore themes of beauty and the obstacles encountered in life, reflecting his personal journey and deep emotional insight.
In 2020, Hai wrote for the Emmy-nominated interactive program ‘When We Stayed Home' for Targo Oculus, which focused on Venice during the pandemic.
Now living in exile due to transphobic harassment, Hai's work continues to reflect his unique experiences, with writings in German, English, and Italian.
The Gondolier by Alex Hai is a brutally honest novel that exposes the harsh realities faced by those society deems as other. It's an unapologetic portrayal of the ongoing struggle for the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness that continues to be a daunting challenge.
