As Children’s Commissioning Editor, I have the absolute pleasure of reading some wonderfully written work. Knowing that, with care, attention and beautiful illustrations, we can turn that work into a book that brings joy to a child is something very special.
I remember our early beginnings: a few small rooms, horses in the field to keep us company, and a handful of desks making up the production, marketing and submissions departments. We could all shout to each other without even leaving our desks.
As we sold more books and received more submissions, we knew we must be doing something right. The team grew, the office space expanded, and we embraced new technology to streamline our work and reduce paper usage.
Eventually, with books stacked in boxes as high as the ceiling, we realised we had outgrown our home. The big move to a spacious new building, complete with a huge warehouse, was an exciting step forward. Many familiar faces are still here, new members have joined us, and Pegasus continues to grow as one family.
Our Adult Editorial Team has a shared interest in finding the best manuscripts and curating them into page-turners. With so many submissions coming through to us, it is our role to spot the potential in each one.
We join authors at the start of their publishing journey, making sure we understand their scope and vision from the beginning. It is important that the author’s voice is reflected across our published titles, which is why we pride ourselves on having meaningful conversations from day one and working collaboratively throughout.
Once we have a clear direction for the work, we assess it for commercial viability. This can look different across genres, but includes factors such as quality, originality, author exposure, similar titles, target audience and current market trends.
Successful titles then head to the Editorial Board, where a final decision is made. For authors who make it through evaluation, receiving an offer of publication is an exciting moment. It is always a pleasure to celebrate that with them before the hard work begins.
I have been working for Pegasus Publishers for eight years and counting, and the reason I have stayed for so long is simple: I truly believe in the company and the work we do. Helping make authors’ dreams come true and playing a part in bringing their creations to life is our bread and butter.
As a commissioning editor, I am responsible for identifying, acquiring and shaping the books that define our list. Our publishing programme spans many genres, from commercial fiction and literary works to non-fiction and poetry.
The core of my role is evaluating submissions and helping decide which manuscripts are offered a publishing contract. This involves reviewing a high volume of proposals, manuscripts and pitches, assessing not only their literary merit but also their audience, market position and alignment with our publishing vision.
What ticks my box most is originality: writing that feels fresh, distinctive and purposeful. Whether it is a compelling narrative voice, an unexpected perspective or an idea that challenges convention, I am drawn to work with a clear sense of identity.
A well-prepared submission also matters. It signals commitment and helps create the foundation for a strong collaborative relationship.
Ultimately, my role is both curatorial and collaborative: to discover voices that deserve to be heard, champion ideas that will resonate with readers, and help shape manuscripts into books that succeed creatively and commercially. It is a privilege to play a part in bringing new writing into the world.
There’s something extraordinary about saying so much with so little. The rhythm, imagery, and emotion of poetry can linger long after the final line. Not everyone understands it, but that’s okay. It’s a niche club that I’m happy and proud to be part of.
I would like to share with you one of Derrick Mapps poems. He is among my favourite poets.
Thoughts are real, or so it seems, while sitting under the tree of dreams, a place where your heart is free and your soul can wonder in out of reality and certain dreams that come to mind quickly fade as if going blind and then a dream that makes you feel where you are is so real, or so it seems while sitting under the tree of dreams.
