The Man with Mud on His Boots

Peter Chainey

From humble beginnings on a post-war council estate to the highest courts in the land, Peter Chainey's life encompasses both the rough and tumble of growing up in the bomb sites of Southampton and the thrill of creating new statute law and meeting Diana Dors. Family, tragedy and love are interlaced with the law, civic responsibility and community representation, in this memoir set against the background of the UK's history in the last seventy years.

Peter Chainey was a senior legal executive advocate for forty-eight years. He was born on a newly constructed social housing estate in Southampton, three years after the end of the World War II, when rationing still existed. A committed mod in the sixties, he had an appetite for life and pulled himself out of his humble beginnings, despite initially not gaining many GCEs from school, to become a well-known and respected lawyer. A dynamic individual, he founded and chaired the Southampton Civil Litigation Group, as well as being a chairman of Winchester Round Table. Peter is also the successful author of Legal Time Limits. Having survived major heart surgery and now suffering from Alzheimer's and vascular dementia, Peter wanted to create a record of his life and achievements. He has been married three times and lives near Winchester, with his third wife, Lizzie. They have been married for twenty-six years.
