Em has made her way to London, but how will she and Freddie, two strangers, be able to set up house and provide a home for his sisters? With her real aim being a home in Liverpool, will Freddie be able to adapt to repeated interruptions in both his working life and his relationships? Will George be able to renew his contact with Em, and what about her other family members?

Within the framework of some of the most significant historical events of the early nineteen-fifties, further surprises await the reader, leading on from the previous volumes as well as introducing new characters and circumstances. Between the Prologue to Volume I and the Epilogue to Volume IV, a line has been traced which ultimately completes the circle of this fascinating narrative.
