A young nun, Hope O'Neill, orphaned at birth, sets out from Ireland to find her unknown father's family members, eventually discovering them in Southwark, London. The story centres on Hope as a mother as she unravels the circumstances around the life of Gary Johnson, a troubled, disturbed and violent young man who was one of her rapists.
Through a series of dangerous encounters, including a near-lethal stabbing, a reckless theft and a dramatic river rescue, Gary eventually comes under the influence of Hope's family and the quietly charismatic priest, Oliver Lockwood, together with his youth assistant, Robbie. Their lives become entwined as Oliver and Robbie seek to support Gary. Influenced by the priest and her newly found family, Hope strives to find it in her heart to be reconciled with her rapist.
