Joelene Cheney, the author of I Need more Space, released their book in 2020. We wanted to catch up with the new author and see how life has been treating them since they were published.
Did you always dream of becoming an author?
I did as a child and then other things- life really took over- then I returned to writing later in life and found that old flame for writing had always been there.
What was your first job?
Like most people my first job was doing odds and ends around the house! But the first paid job which allowed me some independence to buy clothing, books and a Sony Walkman (very important to a teenage me, might I add!) was working at a fast food chain at the tender age of 15. It had nothing to do with writing unfortunately but was a great place to meet interesting characters for inspiration later in life!
How did you come about writing your book? Was that your intention or did you start writing for fun?
After having children, I took some time out from full-time employment and it was then that I began to seriously write. First, I entered short story competitions and as I began to see some works published, I began to wonder what it would be like to be a part of creating storybooks. So, I gave it a go…
What was your life like before you became an author?
Life was much easier and guilt free, I can tell you! Pre- writing, any leisure time was spent procrastinating and feeling no guilt about it. Now, if there is any leisure time, I wonder whether I should be writing…
Did you face any struggles before becoming an author? If so, how did you overcome them?
I think a struggle that I faced was knowing nothing about the publishing world and knowing no one who could tell me made it a struggle. It meant trawling through websites before I could feel like I knew a very tiny bit about publishing in the 21st Century!
Now that you are a published author, how has your life changed, if at all?
Not sure if it has changed much.
Can you please describe a typical day in your life now?
A typical day consists of doing things I have to do and then trying to squeeze in some writing time!
What is your most memorable moment of your life as an author?
A historical short story, that I penned, was read out after publication to an audience in Melbourne.
In a few words, how would you review your experience with Pegasus Publishers?
I would say, things went as outlined in the contract, running smoothly and as expected. This made the process to publication less complex and difficult.
Why did you choose Pegasus Publishers?
I chose Pegasus Publishers because they provided me with the real possibility of achieving my goal of being published.
