Five Winter Reads

Five Winter Reads

 |  Book Nook

Daylight savings has struck! Which means that we are now cold and largely nocturnal. Hurray.

Not to worry though, one of the best ways to stave off the woes of seasonal affective disorder is to delve into the comforting pages of a good book. We have a handful of cosy reads that we think you'll like, and today we're counting them down.

Phil Lanzon- Snowdrop Diamonds

The second book in Phil Lanzon's stunning fantasy trilogy, 'Snowdrop Diamonds' continues the story of Elin and Charlie. After Elin's battle with the Mudchalk Devil, her trusted magical weapon is stolen by the powers of a greedy society bent on destroying the human race. This is both a whimsical and richly detailed fantasy story, that will draw you in and not let you go until the last word.

Faraday Rose- The Ties that Bind

In need of a good love triangle tale to read by the fire? Look no further than 'The Ties that Bind'. It tells the story of two polar-opposite women, Kate and Annie. Kate is disciplined and self-sacrificing, believing that if things aren't going her way, she just needs to work harder. Annie is a drug addict, and uses as a way to escape the memories of her tumultuous childhood, directionlessly leaping from bad situation to bad situation. Both women, despite their differences, are in love with Jack, who they'll both do absolutely anything for.

Rachael Linday- Tales from the Dark Hole: The Frost Giant

Following the continued adventures of Hobnail, Rachael Lindsay's wonderful and wintery 'The Frost Giant' sees our chief character embarking on a journey to save winter as she knows it. Hobnail longs for crisp, snowy days, but is surrounded by nothing but fog and rain. Suspecting that something wicked is afoot, and determined to find out what happened to the weather, Hobnail embarks on a treacherous journey with her friend Berinhard.

Sandra Robinson- All Over the Place

Want to read a book that'll get you brainstorming holiday destination ideas while sheltering from the freezing rain outside? Sandra Robinson's 'All Over the Place' is here to help you out! Filled to the brim with strange and funny anecdotes from over the years, Robinson provides a window into her career as a travel agent, charting the peaks, valleys and in-betweens. You're guaranteed to find yourself with some new travel inspiration after reading this!

Keith Fisher- Brummies in Canada

It's not all too uncommon for English winter to prompt thoughts of moving to another country, as dramatic as that may sound. This collection of mostly fictional stories might give you some ideas, or at least let you daydream a little bit. Birmingham-born Keith Fisher has been all around the world, and has spent substantial amounts of time in Canada, and using his knowledge of the country, its culture, and the people who live there, he has crafted a collection of tales that depict Birmingham-folk settling in Canada.
