Author Life - Fred Schreuder

Author Life - Fred Schreuder

 |  Author Life

Fred Schreuder, the author of Claudia and the Post Box, released his book in April 2020. We wanted to catch up with the new author and see how life had been treating him since he was published.

Did you always dream of becoming an author?

I have always wanted to write a book – I honestly believe we all have one lurking within us. Claudia and the Post Box was not the first story that I started writing, but I felt compelled to write it as my daughter reached the age of the main character I had envisaged for the story.

What was your first job?

My first job is essentially the job I still currently do – I am a doctor, a Plastic and Hand Surgeon to be precise.

How did you come about writing your book? Was that your intention or did you start writing for fun?

Claudia and the Post Box was a concept that came to me when my daughter was quite young. I always told her stories at bedtime and realised I wanted her to have a story that could be hers forever. It is a story that I hope will empower her and other children that read it. It celebrates friendship, and courage and perseverance (and having a sense of humour).

What was your life like before you became an author?

My life has always been busy – my personal motto is YOLO (You Only Live Once). I always cram as much as I possibly can into a day. Being an author has been immensely rewarding on a personal level but writing the book has naturally entailed a significant time commitment (particularly impacting on my leisure time). The publication of Claudia and the Post Box has made all of the sacrifice entirely worthwhile.

Did you face any struggles before becoming an author? If so, how did you overcome them?

I have been incredibly fortunate throughout my life and I appreciate every opportunity that fate has presented me. I have always worked hard and plan never to have any regrets (like not writing the book I wanted to write).

Now that you are a published author, how has your life changed, if at all?

Life has changed irrevocably in the sense that I have a published book and that cannot be undone. Not even by Covid-19. I still smile to myself, slightly incredulous that I have actually achieved one of my life ambitions that for many years looked hugely unobtainable.

Can you please describe a typical day in your life now?

Like many people, my life has been disrupted by a viral pandemic. I still get up in the morning but the certainty and routine that I knew before its arrival have vanished. I know I will get through this seismic event that has enveloped all of us and I look forward to once again having a typical day.

What is your most memorable moment of your life as an author?

One of the most memorable moments without a doubt, has to be the day my box from Pegasus arrived. It was delivered to the front door with twenty five copies of Claudia and the Post Box, all very neatly packaged, within it. Holding the book made it all thrillingly real. The next most exciting moment was seeing a 5 star review pop up on the Amazon website!

In a few words, how would you review your experience with Pegasus Publishers?

I have enjoyed the whole experience of publishing with Pegasus. Everyone is professional, approachable and extremely efficient. Their response to any question is almost immediate. I have felt supported throughout the whole process.
