Twenty-five-year-old Debbie George is living in a loveless marriage, a sham. It is the result of marrying on the rebound. However, on a cruise to Norway with her husband, Michael, and her in-laws, she is transported back in time to the ninth-century world of the Vikings - and handsome Olaf, who is all that Michael isn't. Soon she and Olaf are madly in love. But Debbie has an enemy, Gudrun, who also wants Olaf, and will stop at nothing to get him.

Learning that Olaf is to go on a raid to Anglo-Saxon Britain, ignoring the danger, Debbie dresses up in male clothing and stows away on a longship.

This is the tale of her adjustment from twenty-first-century England to a life of hardship and endurance, with no transport or medical care, where life expectancy is short, the people warlike, and families live hand to mouth. Children die.

How will Debbie cope with all this, as well as the threat of Gudrun who hates her for having the man she wants and is out to get her revenge?
