According to St John’s Gospel, Nicodemus was the member of the Jerusalem Sanhedrin who became a loyal disciple of Jesus of Nazareth, believing him to be the Messiah and the true King of Israel. He is recorded as conversing at length with Jesus, protesting at the decision of the Sanhedrin to brand him as a false Messiah and even assisting Joseph of Arimathea in the removal of the body of Jesus from the cross and its burial in the tomb. This we have known for nearly 2000 years.

But only now, astonishingly, do we possess The Epistle of Nicodemus.

This letter is of extraordinary importance as Nicodemus in his old age knew more about Jesus than anyone else at a time when the earliest written accounts of Jesus were being collected and when most other eyewitnesses were no longer alive. Written to all churches throughout the Roman world, his great universal Epistle had been provoked by two false accounts newly in circulation relating to the birth of Jesus which he felt compelled to refute.

Anyone who is surprised by some of the revelations of Nicodemus will have difficulty in proving otherwise from the Bible itself or from history.
